Simple Steps For Preventing A Kitchen Fire

Posted by admin in Uncategorized

Believe it or not, cooking is the leading cause of home fires across the globe. Attempting to fight a kitchen fire can be very dangerous. Grease fires do not react well to water. This has lead to many physical injuries among panicking home owners. However, kitchen fires are fairly easy to avoid. There are many simple steps that can prevent a kitchen fire from ever occurring.

Step One

The most obvious kitchen fire prevention method is to stay inside the kitchen when cooking. Most kitchen fires occur because food is left unattended on the stove. Try not to become distracted when cooking. Stay alert until the meal has been prepared and all appliances have been completely shut off.

Step Two

Another simple way to avoid a kitchen fire is to reduce the amount of loose material near all hot surfaces. Window curtains above a stove are never a good idea. Try not to wear loose clothing when cooking and also remove all plastic and paper from around the stove.

Step Three

Do not use an extension cord when cooking. All appliances should be plugged directly into a wall outlet. This creates a cleaner cooking environment and also reduces the chance of an electrical fire. It is also wise to check all electrical cords to ensure that there are no frayed or exposed wires. Electrical cords should be replaced as soon as any wear becomes visible.

Step Four

A clean kitchen is less likely to cause a fire. Leftover oil and grease is flammable and can ignite the next time you use the stove. Clean your kitchen regularly and reduce clutter around all appliances. A grease fire can quickly spread to any nearby flammable objects.

Step Five

It is also very important to ensure that every smoke alarm in the home is working properly. You must test the smoke alarm in the kitchen on a regular basis. There is no telling when a kitchen fire may strike. Generally, home insurance will help to cover any serious losses due to a major kitchen fire. Talk to an insurance company about the best policy for your home.
